The mullion stay connected to the inner edge of one of the fridge doors, this creates surface for the doors to seal against.

Mullions offer support, and in the case of refrigeration they help seal the cold air and keep the fridge cold. If the top "hinge" or "hook" has become damaged then then mullion will no longer be flush to the fridge, no longer sealing the insides away.
