The mullion is the vertical bar which is connected to the inner edge of one of the fridge doors, this creates surface for the doors to seal against the body.

Mullions offer support, and in the case of refrigeration they help seal the cold air and keep the fridge cold, refrigerating the items inside. If the vertical bar is damaged or no longer does performs the role you will noticed that the door will no longer retain the cold air.
